Leo P. Schmitz currently serves as the Cook County Sheriff’s Chief of Police. He accepted this position in September of 2019. His duties include running the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department. This is a full-service police department including a Patrol Division, Detective Division, Special Victims Unit, Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Narcotics Unit and Street Crimes Unit. Cook County is the second largest County Agency in the country.
Previously, Leo Schmitz was appointed by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner in February 2015 to serve as Director of the Illinois State Police (ISP). He served in that capacity until February of 2019. As a multifaceted police agency, ISP enforces the laws protecting the public while providing an array of special services to local, state, and federal agencies. Under the leadership of Director Schmitz, the Illinois State Police strengthened relationships with partner agencies and the communities which they serve. Prior to his work with the ISP, Leo Schmitz proudly served 29 years with the Chicago Police Department.
