Mel Siegel has been a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), School of Computer Science, The Robotics Institute, since 1982. His research and teaching have focused primarily on sensing, sensors, perception, and human-computer interfaces. Prior to joining the CMU faculty, he directed research and development at a small custom-designed scientific instrumentation company. His academic career began with a National Institue of Standards and Technology (NIST) connection: he was a graduate student of Nobel laureate John L. Hall at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) and the University of Colorado - Boulder. Between his undergraduate studies at Cornell and his graduate studies in Boulder, he taught physics and math in Ghana as a very early Peace Corps volunteer.
