Dr. Shkel is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. From 2009 to 2013, he took a leave from academia to serve as a program manager in the Microsystems Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he initiated and managed an invested portfolio in microtechnology development for Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (micro-PNT). His research interests are reflected in over 300 publications, 43 issued patents, and three books, and include precision gyroscopes, integrated inertial measurement units, systems and algorithms for inertial navigation, and chip-scale solutions for navigation aiding and self-contained navigation. He has been awarded in 2013 the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service. Dr. Shkel is a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
